and probably kept me awake for minutes more, but I knew there had to be a tribe, and here it is.
As an aside, why, when I was a child, was I told you can never put and after a comma, and now find out that you can?

Re: For hours it puzzled me..
Thu, December 11, 2003 - 2:33 PMBecause, strictly speaking, you can't. A comma's purpose is to differentiate betwen separate clauses of a sentence. The word 'and' can fulfill the same brief, thereby creating an unnecessary repetition.
Of course you're not supposed to start a sentence with the word 'because' either. But I just did. So f**k grammar! :-)

Re: For hours it puzzled me..
Fri, December 12, 2003 - 7:42 PMYou can only put and after a comma if you're linking two independent clauses. So in your sentance above, you shouldn't have a comma. The "now find our that you can" clause is not independent. Your comma separated that dependent clause from it's subject "I" in the first clause. It disturbs the balance of the universe, but only in a slight way. -

Wed, December 17, 2003 - 11:00 AMHowever, if the first subject is 'I', and the second subject is you (or are you?), are these not then independent clauses? The plot thickens... -

Re: For hours it puzzled me..
Thu, December 18, 2003 - 3:47 PMBecause "I" is the subject of both clauses. I think it should be read:
"I [subject] was told [verb] you can never put and after a comma [object], and now [I] [subject] find out [verb] that you can [object]." -
